History

Bloody Mary was formed in 1988 by Guitarist/Songwriter/Singer Dave Gage, who called the jazz infused party music they played “funkadelic.” Several songs revolve around beer because “beer, it is our life.”

The band went through a few drummers and bass players before landing on the lineup of Gage, drummer Ed Schumann, guitarist Matt Simmons, and bassist Road Narrows. The band recorded a few records, including an untitled released in 1989 and the Devito Sessions, recorded at Retrophonics studio in St. Augustine in 1990. By that time, Narrows had moved out of town and was replaced by bassist Chris Sturgeon.

Bloody Mary was a popular live band in Orlando and played several shows, including opening for the Dead Milkmen and Firehose, and they played regularly at Club Space Fish. Bloody Mary broke up in 1991, and Gage went on to form two more bands, Disco Biscuit and DOPE.

Reunion

Two original members, Drummer Ed Schumann and Guitarist Matt Simmons, will reunite to play the Club Space Fish Reunion Show. Almost original bassist Chris Sturgeon will join them. Dave Gage passed away in 2014 after a two-year battle with Melanoma (wear sunscreen, you mofo’s). Dave’s wife, Jeannine, and other guests vocalists will join Matt, Ed, and Chris for the show.
